چکیده

The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) instrument on the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft has returned a large amount of data on the topography of Mars. It is possible to generate high resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) from these data by employing data interpolation techniques. Four interpolation algorithms were selected for testing on MOLA data: Delaunay-based linear interpolation, splining, nearest neighbour, and natural neighbour. These methods were applied to the MOLA data of Korolev crater for qualitative analysis. In addition, a DEM of a part of Iceland was used for quantitative testing by simulating MOLA data acquisition, interpolating those data, and then calculating the mean absolute error (MAE) between the interpolated and original DEM. Execution speeds were measured for the four algorithms. The natural neighbour method proved superior both quantitatively and qualitatively to other methods tested, but is relatively slow computationally.

Gridding Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter data with GMT: effects of pixel size and interpolation methods on DEM integrity

High-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) based on Mars orbiter laser altimeter (MOLA) data provide geospatial characterizations of Martian topography. MOLA range data are essentially two-dimensional topographic profiles. Transforming these profile data into three-dimensional DEMs requires the interpolation of a continuous surface between MOLA observations. To this end, we outline a metho...

Mars orbiter laser altimeter: receiver model and performance analysis.

The design, calibration, and performance of the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) receiver are described. The MOLA measurements include the range to the surface, which is determined by the laser-pulse time of flight; the height variability within the footprint determined by the laser echo pulse width; and the apparent surface reflectivity determined by the ratio of the echo to transmitted pul...

Combined Bundle Adjustment of Moc Stereo Images and Mola Altimetry Data for Precise Mars Topographic Mapping

Launched in 1996, Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) carries two types of mapping equipments: Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) and Mar Orbiter Camera (MOC). MOLA collects accurate laser altimetry data over the Mars surface, while MOC acquires high resolution images. In the process of MOLA registration to MOC images, a certain systematic shift was reported in previous studies. This shift may possibly...

Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter pulse width measurements and footprint-scale roughness

[1] The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) measured the pulse width and energy of altimetric laser returns during the course of two Mars years of operations. As secondary science objectives, MOLA obtains the footprint-scale roughness and the bidirectional reflectivity of Mars. MOLA underwent extensive preflight calibration and pulse measurements were monitored continuously in flight, but anoma...
